Before you have a contractor come out and take measurements.
I suggest you take your own measurements. This way you will have a rough estimate on how many square feet and lineal feet your current countertop has. To find out the benefits of measuring your own countertop Click Here.
What to have ready when your granite contractor is out to measure for your granite countertop.
Have your new or old sink ready for them to take measurements. Most granite companies will cut out sink/cook top holes in shop before they ship them out to the house.
Have your plumbing fixtures ready (sink faucet, soap dispenser, etc.) at the time of templating. Determine the position of each so your granite contractor knows where to drill the holes.
Have your cook top for them to take measurements.
If you have a range you will need to have it there so your granite contractor knows what size the range is so they can have the new granite countertop come as close to it with out touching it. If you can’t have it there for them, look in the owners manual or online for dimensions.
If you have a refrigerator you will need to have it there so your granite contractor can account for the measurement. This way your new granite countertop comes as close to your refrigerator with out touching it. If the refrigerator is unavailable look in the owners manual or online for dimensions.

General information about granite.
Make sure you understand and follow all the local building rules and codes.
All new building projects are unique and all situations cannot possibly be covered in these guidelines.
A 1” to 1 ½” over hang is the standard over hang for kitchens, bathrooms and bars. This will give it a nice look while letting you open your cabinets underneath. To get a feel for the difference between 1" and 1 ½" you should place a piece of granite or something similar on top of the cabinet. This will allow you to open and close your cabinet drawers to get a feel for when your granite countertop is in place.
Since granite slabs are big, most granite companies do not hold your actual stone in their shop. Most granite companies will send you to a main supplier where you will actually look at the stone and put the stone on hold for your fabricators to pickup. Note: You will not discuss prices or how the job will be handled with their supplier, the supplier is only to supply you with your stone. They can answer questions about the granites durability, color matching, and what is the best stone for your house.
Granite comes in two thicknesses, 3/4 inch, 2cm and 3cm, 1 ¼ inch. Both are great to have and what you choose will depend on what type of look you want in your home. I suggest that you look at both thickness before deciding on which granite to purchase for your home.
You can have the ¾ inch granite laminated to make it look as if it is actually 1 ½ inches thick. This can be a very nice look in your home.
Granite is solid and very heavy, one square foot of granite can weigh between 12 to 25 lbs depending on the thickness of the granite and the color (The darker the granite the heavier it is usually). This alone makes it necessary to have professionals install your granite. Granite can be very fragile if not handled properly and break. Once the granite is installed it is very hard to break, unless it is not installed properly.
When the granite contractor is fabricating your granite countertops, they will have pieces left over from the sink cutout and cook top cut out. It is a good idea to ask for those pieces. Store them in a safe place for later. Why? You now have a few pieces you can take along with you to the store to match colors with.
Under mount sinks are very nice because you can wipe all the debris from the countertop right down in to the sink with a garbage disposal. This makes cleaning your granite very easy.
Granite is made by mother nature, your granite countertop is truly one of a kind. No matter what kind of granite you select for your kitchen countertop, you will have a gleaming and long-lasting granite surface to cook on.
